Joe Rodota Trail Homeless Issues

Sonoma County Homeless Epidemic brings Big Pest Problems

Sonoma County Homeless Epidemic: About 200 homeless people call the Joe Rodota Trail their home in Santa Rosa. This trail is visited by the community and many cyclists. The trail’s new residents have been stirring up plenty of attention in the community and local media.

The Sonoma County Homeless Epidemic has become more of a public health crisis recently. Local news has reported a major rat problem around the encampments along the trail.

There is recent aerial footage from the local Sonoma County Sheriff Department’s helicopter.  This footage shows just exactly how this homeless camp is generating attention due to a high rodent population. This infrared footage was captured on December 12th, 2019 at night above the Joe Rodota Trail in Santa Rosa.  The encampment is now the largest homeless camp in the community.

Integrated Pest Management

The state’s integrated pest management program cites sanitation as the key to rat control. According to the program website, without proper sanitation, the benefits of population control will be lost, therefore the rats will quickly return. Park officials who oversee the Joe Rodota Trail have authorized work to begin next week to address the rat problem.

Pestmaster Services will begin trapping rats and baiting them with a nontoxic substance that reduces female rats’ ability to breed, therefore slowing population growth.  This information was presented in an email from Sonoma County Regional Parks spokeswoman Meda Freeman. Traditional poisons weren’t approved for use because of their potential to harm trail residents and pets. Rodenticides can be dangerous when used in the wrong environment and the methods approved in this circumstance are both highly effective and much safer than traditional rodent poison.

Community Solutions

The Press Democrat has even shown light on the current issue along with other local news media. The local community is becoming more and more aware of this public health hazard. Above all, The City of Santa Rosa and County Officials are more aware and are forming a plan of action to combat health concerns.

Barbie Robinson, the county’s health services director, said county officials recognize the immediate need to address the public health concerns on the trail, and touted the county’s actions to date. Firstly those include the placement of 11 portable toilets, two hand-washing stations, regular garbage pickups and nightly security patrols for the safety of trail occupants. In conclusion the County and the City are working to remedy this issue, safely and humanely.
